Current Events Assignment - On going for second semester - This will be due weekly - every Monday or the first day we return from a weekend
Learning Target for this assignment is to improve your writing based on what you see professional writers doing... get a critical eye and imprive the way you write for your section
•If you are a news writer, then select a breaking news story from the A section of the newspaper...
•If you are a feature/entertainment writer select a part two story
•If you are an editorial/opinion writer select one of the same
•If you are a sports writer select a sports article
Mention - the by-line (author), what paper you got the article from (preferrably The New York Times), the section and don't forget to attach the article to your analysis. Make sure to highlight what you talk about in the article... be specific to the text.
Identify and analyze all of the following:
•headline
•lead
•any pictures/captions
•paragraph length
•diction (author's choices of words)
•direct/indirect quotes
•journalistic style
•balance of information
Make sure to reflect on the article -
•What does the content make you think about?
•What are you curious to know more about?
•What questions do you have?
•What did you notice about the style of writing that you can incorporate into your own writing?
•What did the writer do well? What could they have done better
You may only use the NEW YORK TIMES - absolutely no using the Post or Daily News
Select 1 article from the section you are writing in... •If you are a news writer, then select a breaking news story from the A section of the newspaper...

Thursday self assessment and goal setting
In class on Thursday you will be working on a self-assessment essay - I expect it to be treated like a persuasive essay where you make assertions and support those assertions with evidence from your work and class participation. You will be discussing the work in terms of the standards on:
http://www.nylearns.org/standards/searchstandards.asp?caption=Search+NYS+Standards+by+-+English%A0Language%A0Arts%A0%282005%29+-+Commencement&searchOn=&StandardTypeIDs=1%2C2%2C3%2C4%2C5%2C7%2C13%2C14%2C15%2C16%2C18%2C19%2C21%2C22%2C23%2C24%2C25%2C26&backPage=%2Fstandards%2Findex.asp&StandardIDs=18639&GradeLevelID=14%2C15%2C16%2C17&Submit.x=72&Submit.y=11
You will also be reflecting honestly on what you deserve based on this evidence and setting goals for the second semester.

January issue
Reminder that tomorrow is the final deadline for any piece set to go into the January issue. As of the end of the day in school tomorrow, the pieces that are going in will be decided so that the layout team can begin to layout effectively.
If you don't complete your work, it may NOT go into the Feb issue if it isn't timely anymore.
All work is still due... even if it is not published.
We will start working on Feb issue as of Thursday this week.
Welcome back... happy new year.
